Where do I get a permit for a beach wedding in the Outer Banks?
The good news is that the only beach you need to get a permit for is on the Hatteras National Seashore, which is from the south end of Nags Head all the way down to Hatteras Village. No permit needed from Nags Head all the way up to the border of Virginia.

What is the best time of day for a beach wedding?
Depends on the time of year. In May through September, most photographers love those last two hours before sunset the most. But sunrise weddings are beautiful as well.
Are dogs allowed on the beach for weddings?
Yes, if they are on a leash. It’s a really cool touch that lots of couples do on the Outer Banks.
Who is in charge of holding the wedding rings?
Traditionally, the best man holds the rings until it is time, and the maid of honor is in charge of the bride’s bouquet. But it’s not uncommon for the ring bearer to have them, or one with the best man and the other ring with the maid of honor.
How far in advance should I start planning my wedding?
The best would be like a year to a year and a half. But many couples do it 6 months out as well. If you start planning and making your key bookings early, you’ll have more of a chance of getting the best options that fit you.
Should I hire a wedding videographer?
The number one regret that couples tell me after the wedding is that they didn't have a videographer. Photography is a must as well, but more and more couples are seeing the value of reliving that moment through a professional video.
Where do I get a North Carolina marriage license?
At the Register of Deeds office in any NC county. But it must be a NC marriage license and not from another state. Here’s some more info on the topic… NC Marriage License
Can we have a Toast on the beach after the ceremony?
Sure, I see it all the time, especially at weddings with 20 or less.
What do I need to get for a Sand Ceremony?
All you need is a vessel of some kind that the beach sand will be poured into. It can be something you buy online, or an antique bottle that you like, a shadowbox frame, etc. I have big clam shells you can use for pouring the sand.
Can the officiant get the marriage license for us?
Not in North Carolina. You have to apply and acquire it yourselves. But after the wedding and everything is filled out, 99% of the time I file it back to the State for the couple.

Do I have to have witnesses in North Carolina?
Yes, the state requires two witnesses to sign the marriage license. They don’t have to be family or friends. They can be random people who might just be around the beach looking for shells. Or even the photographer can be a witness.

Are there ways to include our children in the wedding?
Absolutely! There are many ways, including having them do a reading, sand ceremony, ring bearer, junior bridesmaids, etc.
Do I have to have witnesses at the wedding for it to be legal?
This varies from state to state, but in North Carolina you have to have 2 witnesses sign the marriage license on the day of the wedding. This can be the photographer or just someone on the beach looking for shells or walking their dog.
How long should a beach wedding be?
20 to 25 minutes is about perfect. It’s not too short and it’s not too long. You don’t want a 5-10 minute wedding because it will feel like a blink. And you don’t want an hour long wedding because everyone will be checked out.
Where is the best place to get married on the Outer Banks?
There really isn’t a ‘best place’ because there are so many options and it just depends on what you want. Most couples get married with their toes in the sand next to the Atlantic Ocean.
Should I get event insurance for my beach wedding?
We absolutely encourage couples to get event insurance for so many reasons. It’s very reasonable, and who knows what could happen; nor’easter storm, hurricane, pandemic, etc.
Do I have to have a rehearsal?
No, there’s no rule that you have to have a rehearsal the day before your wedding, but they sure do bring a whole lot of peace of mind for the couple being married, and really everyone involved.
Who should I have attend my beach wedding rehearsal?
Anyone that has a role in the ceremony. It’s a good idea to have them all attend: parents, wedding party, dog handler, wedding planner, flower girl, etc. Sometimes I even see the photographer come to the rehearsal.
Will tourists enjoying the beach ruin my outer banks wedding?
Not one bit. You’ll have plenty of room and won’t even know they are there when the ceremony begins. Most everyone will move their beach chairs a little further away so as to give you more room for the big moment.
